More astonishing, however, are its handling capabilities, which are as impressive as its straight-line speed. An available Drift mode disengages drive to the front wheels and turns the E63 S into a rear-drive monster that’s eager to engage in tail-out antics. In all-wheel drive, it proved to be the fastest sedan we’ve ever tested in our annual Lightning Lap competition. Add in the model’s communicative chassis, taut steering, and luxurious trimmings, and the result is an exceptional vehicle even in this class of extraordinary machines.

The Mercedes-AMG E63 S, based on the latest E-class sedan, is all-new for 2018. The luxurious E63 S is only available with all-wheel drive and is motivated by a new 603-hp twin-turbocharged V-8 mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The E63 S sedan’s twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine corrals 603 horses and 627 lb-ft of torque that are channeled to all four wheels through a quick-thinking nine-speed automatic transmission for breathtaking performance. Those looking for additional fun can engage Drift mode, which disconnects power from the front wheels and turns this supersedan into a rear-wheel-drive, oversteer-prone plaything. Left in Comfort mode, the engine and transmission react with stoicism and smoothness. The E63 S is a delicious ensemble of breathtaking acceleration and deft handling, with mid-size sedan comfort and versatility.
